About Marvel ESU
Marvel Explorer Scout Unit is one of four Explorer Scout Units in Kingswood District  - one of the 9 Districts that make up Avon Scouts. The other Explorer Units in the District are 229ºW, DES and Mystery. We are part of The Scout Association, and one part of a worldwide movement of over 28 million. Explorer Scouts were created in 2002 as part of a nationwide scheme to reorganise Scouting in the UK. We are based at the 67th Kingswood, 1st Mangotsfield Scout Headquarters in Mangotsfield, Bristol.

We are an active group of 14-18 year olds, and adult volunteers who enjoy a wide range of activities, including hiking and camping, cooking, creative challenges, games and team challenges. We also take part in activities such as white water rafting, gliding, archery, track cycling, climbing and surfing – and are always open to new suggestions!

At Marvel you also have the opportunity to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and to complete the Scout Awards along-side. We also encourage and support our members to take opportunities to become young leaders at our local Beaver, Cub and Scout groups.

From January to May every year many of our members take part in the annual Ten Tors Challenge on Dartmoor. Kingswood District Explorers Ten Tors Team provides excellent training which usually starts on the first Sunday in January at Rodway Common. The programme consists of weekly hikes; practice weekends on Dartmoor; additional training; and social events. The actual event usually takes place in the second weekend of May. Kingswood District Ten Tors Team has an extremely successful track record in this event due to the outstanding training they provide. To be able to take part in the Ten Tors Challenge is an amazing opportunity, and many of the participants will remember the event with pride for the remainder of their lives, and for some it may even be a life-changing experience. Once bitten by the Ten Tors ‘bug’ many of our Marvel Explorers complete the event up to 6 times!
